The Kansas Department of Transportation has submitted a grant application of $10 million in stimulus funding to the Federal Rail Administration for upgrades that would allow additional passenger rail service.
The application is a further attempt to help connect passenger rail service from Kansas City to Oklahoma City.
KDOT says the $10 million would be used to fund signal crossing upgrades along the BNSF Railway between Newton and the Kansas-Oklahoma border.
Proponents of passenger rail travel trough the state are trying to extend the Amtrak line between Oklahoma City and Ft. Worth, Texas, north to Kansas City.
