THE ISSUE of class is making a dangerous and potentially lethal reappearance in British politics. Last week, Labour's Deputy Leader Harriet Harman tried to depict the Shadow Chancellor George Osborne as a kind of debauched, upperclass Regency rake.

What she did not mention is one of her late aunts happens to have been a countess, and she herself was privately educated at St Paul's Girl's School. Mr Osborne, the son of a baronet, attended St Paul's School for boys, so there is a pleasing symmetry here.
