What five species are telling scientists about habitat damage and repair in South Florida
Peter Frederick and his colleagues have a secret: the exact location of an ongoing wildlife spectacle somewhere in the Everglades. The spot is home to what the University of Florida biologist calls "probably the most picturesque and beautiful bird colony in the world." Shrubs and trees festooned with blooming bromeliads host tricolored herons, great egrets, little blue herons, snowy egrets, snail kites, anhingas and more.
"It's an image nobody tells you about these days," says Frederick. That's because the region's wading birds have never come close to fully recovering ...
