With five minutes to go before Chessie Racing and eight other boats cross the starting line in Auckland, New Zealand, to travel 6,670 miles around Cape Horn in some of the world's most treacherous waters, skipper Dee Smith is concerned.

There appears to be a half-knot more wind on the left side of the course and a slightly better angle. Smith, of San Francisco, and tactician Gavin Brady of Annapolis, Md., don't seem to have the same concerns as the rest of the world watching this re-start. Cape Horn and Brazil are not on their minds. The first turning mark, just four miles away, is their sole focus.
