Architectural ornament is considered one of the four primary art forms (along with architecture, sculpture, and painting). Ornament is defined as decoration used to embellish parts of a building or object that may "exude intense emotion, give pleasure, and enhance beauty."
These embellishments all but vanished in modern architectural design in the twentieth century. Replaced by streamline decorations and details that reflected modernists' sensibilities and ideas of architectural beauty and practicality. However, these simplified decorations took off like wildfire due to the ease at replicating and mass-producing them.
