When the dance troupe Emio Greco/PC and the composer Michael Gordon of Bang on a Can got together for a residency at MASS MoCA in 2005, one of the first things on their schedule was a field trip to Guitar World in Albany to buy eight electric guitars.
"How often do you buy eight guitars at once? It was really exciting," Gordon recalled.
That was the fun part; then came the work. Over the next 10 days of the residency--and the next three years of developing the evening-long piece "(purgatorio) POPOPERA"--the dancers faced the challenge of learning to play guitar well enough that they could actually perform part of Gordon's score for the piece live on ...
