Tony Trischka, who plays Saturday, Oct. 10, at Deepwater Theatre in Ocracoke, wasn't born with a banjo on his knee.
But it sure seems that way.
For three decades, the 63-year-old musician, who's often called the "father of the melodic style of banjo," has been reaching beyond the normal constraints of traditional string music. Though the five-string is thought of as primarily a bluegrass instrument, it's something else in Trischka's hands.
His sound is ever-evolving, stacking folk, pop, modern jazz and world music on a bluegrass base. After listening to several tracks on his MySpace page, it's clear that Trischka grew up with equal affection ...
