Edwin O. Perrin (1822-1889), with bowie knife, sword, rifle and looking glass, looks like a man with some serious business to attend to but who might not get there too quickly. The burro's name, noted in pencil on this early 1860s carte de visite, seems to be "Old Harry." U.S. Secretary of War Simon Cameron sent Perrin to New Mexico Territory in 1861 on a confidential mission to help Colonel Kit Carson organize, train and supply volunteers to repel Confederate invaders from the territory.
