Shaking off a lousy, post-clunker September one more miserable month in a tough, turbulent year automakers see the fourth quarter as a race to grab loose market share.

September sales totaled 746,206 units down 23 percent from September 2008. For the year to date, sales are off 27 percent.

But the chaos has created opportunity, says analyst John Casesa, managing director of Casesa Shapiro Group.

"Big share shifts are possible, he says.

There have already been some huge swings in 2009. Two of the Detroit 3 have been hemorrhaging market share this year, and Toyota Motor Sales U.S.A. also has lost ground. ...
