Luxury goods have taken a beating this year, with many high-end jewelers and apparel companies shutting stores or going bankrupt. Upscale fragrances, however, are smelling sweeter than ever. They are raking in cash and expanding, with several international brands planning to open Manhattan shops this fall.
Paris-based Diptyque signed a lease last week for its second Manhattan store, a 500-square-foot boutique at 971 Madison Ave. Despite opening its first New York outpost on Bleecker Street last December, at the height of the recession, the perfumery has watched consumers splurge on its unique scents.
