Saudi Arabia's sedimentary terrain is of exceptional quality. Huge oil reserves are contained in just nine field groups, where recovery costs are the lowest in the world.

There are over 100 oil and gas fields in Saudi Arabia. The main concentration of oilfields lies in the north-eastern part of the kingdom and in the offshore in the north of the Persian Gulf. The areas there are dominated by a series of generally north-south trending oil fairways. The most prominent of them lie along the super-giant Ghawar structure, which consists of several oilfields, the largest in the world.
