The word thug is a legacy to English from the Hindi language, as well as thuggee, defined as the art and science of thuggery. In 19th century India, the Thugs were organized bands of zealots who roamed the countryside taking as much pleasure in taking whatever pleased them as in the mayhem which caused so much distress to their victims.
