The Rockets have had a minimalist core ever since the finicky reign of Jeff Van Gundy started its four-season run in 2003. Stopping the other guy and making the most of little - at the time with Tom Thibodeau designing the defensive schemes - were part and parcel of Houston's ability to compete with the Western Conference aristocracy.
