STERLING - As a visitor to Swaziland, Africa, five years ago, Cynthia A. Baker of Clinton said she was struck by how few adults were around.
"It was shocking, really. You could see there weren't any adults," Miss Baker said. "I was told that it was because 90 to 95 percent of all adults ages 25 to 40 had died in that country."
While the United States has made strides in treating AIDS patients, African nations have not done as well. It is estimated that more than 33 percent of adults are infected with HIV in some parts of the continent. Millions of African children have been orphaned.
