Tillage men to welcome relaxation of green cover requirement

The green cover requirement, which was introduced as part of the Nitrates Directive, is to be relaxed this year.
While official confirmation was not available as we went to press, it is understood that agreement has been reached between the departments of agriculture and environment to amend the deadline dates for this year.
While exact details of the new regime are not known, it is reported that farmers planting spring crops will now be allowed to plough from December 1, rather than the January 15 deadline that was set down by the Nitrates Directive.
