Few anticipated such a strong bounce back in the Russian stockmarket this year, but foreign investors are still concerned about the country's dependence on oil, says Tomas Hirst.

One year ago the future appeared bleak for the Russian Federation.

With commodity prices in freefall and international relations at their most strained since the fall of the Soviet Union, many were predicting a collapse reminiscent of the 1998 crisis.

Few were anticipating the strong bounce back of sentiment towards the country, and fewer still were countenancing investing in Russian equities after economic and political fears appeared to have been realised.
