After several days at a national music conference in Austin, Texas, Barry Poss returned to Durham to find more than 200 phone messages on his desk, drafts of contracts to sign off on, advertising proposals to consider, recordings to listen to and artwork for album covers to approve. Just another day in the life of a minor-league mogul. "It's like a schizophrenic circus," says the 52-year-old owner and president of Sugar Hill Records Inc., the biggest little record company in North Carolina. "I come in with my own agenda, but by the time I hit the desk there are five or six other things to look at."
