Vanguard sued for discrimination
The Vanguard Group Inc. violated federal law when it refused to hire a black applicant because of her race, according to a lawsuit filed by the U.S. Equal Employment Opportunity Commission.
Barbara Alexander initially was told she was qualified for a financial planning manager position at the company, according to the suit, which was filed Sept. 30 but first reported Friday. But Vanguard later claimed that it didn't select her because she was unqualified, the suit alleges.
Vanguard spokeswoman Rebecca Katz wrote in an e-mail Friday that the allegations have no merit.
