The mining industry is expressing grave concerns over an EPA decision to conduct enhanced reviews before deciding whether to issue 79 permits for coal surface mining operations in Appalachia.
Meanwhile, environmentalists who want to stop the practice they call mountaintop removal mining are applauding the EPA decision and say they hope it is a step toward banning the mining practice.
