On July 26, the first fireboat ever built by Canadian boatbuilder A.F. Theriault & Son of Meteghan River, Nova Scotia, was delivered to the Portland (Maine) Fire Department.

The 65'x16'5"x4'2" City of Portland "is a lot of boat for the dollar," said Hans Muhlert of Robert Allan Ltd., Vancouver, British Columbia, the boat's designer. "This was an effort to produce the best value for the customer. You have a 65-foot boat with a large pumping capacity in a package that cost considerably less" than other recent fireboats.
