The deep recession has had a profoundly negative effect on many U.S. shipyards.

This is particularly true in the U.S. Gulf where many of the boatbuilders are closely tied to the fortunes of the offshore oil and gas industry. The recession has gutted the shallow water rig fleet in the Gulf and even tempered the usually steady deepwater and ultradeepwater oil-and-gas sector.
The poor economy has also contributed to at least two shipyard casualties.
