LANCASTER, Va. - Retired U.S. Capt. Charles McKinley Smith of Lancaster passed away Oct. 4, 2009. Charles was born in Brooklyn, N.Y., and was an avid musician throughout high school. In woodworking class, he built a seaworthy kayak which he believed was an early sign of his love for the sea. After high school, he attended the Admiral Farragut Naval Academy. While awaiting his appointment to the U.S. Naval Academy, he began the Line Officer training program at Middlebury College in Vermont.
After his graduation in 1949 from the U.S. Naval Academy, his career began with the Navy Supply Corps in Bayonne, N.J. He served on the destroyer USS Saufley before being ...
