J. C. Penney Company, Inc. (NYSE:JCP) reported comparable store sales for the five-week period ended Oct. 3, 2009, and raised its earnings guidance for the third quarter. Comparable store sales in September decreased 1.4 percent, better than the Company's guidance for sales to decrease 3 to 6 percent. In last year's September period, comparable store sales decreased 12.4 percent. Total Company sales in September decreased 0.6 percent.
