Throughout the ages and around the world, nurses have cared for patients with fever and alterations in body temperature (Beland, 1970; Carnegie, 1995; Holtzclaw, 1992). For many decades, scientists have attempted to solve the mysteries of fever and elevation in body temperature. But controversies still exist over how, why, and when fever occurs in humans. Much still remains to be learned about elevations in body temperature, and much remains to be learned about fever in patients with human immunodeficiency virus/acquired immune deficiency syndrome (HIV/AIDS).
