The Democratic Republic of Congo was known as Zaire before May 1997, when Laurent Kabila overthrew the dictatorship of Mobutu Sese Seko.
A former Belgium colony, the Democratic Republic of Congo is twice the size of Texas, with vast mineral reserves. It is potentially one of Africa's richest countries.
CAPITAL: Kinshasa.
POPULATION: 46 million.
ETHNIC GROUPS: More than 200 tribes, mostly Bantu.
PRINCIPAL LANGUAGES: French and more than 400 African dialects.
RELIGIONS: Christian (70 percent); Muslim (10 percent), Kimbanguist (10 percent).
