ANKARA
AMONG the nation-builders of the past century, Kemal Ataturk stands out. Those hopeful creations, Masaryk's Czechoslovakia and Tito's Yugoslavia are gone. Sukarno in Indonesia, Ho Chi Minh in Vietnam and Nasser in Egypt, all anti-colonial heroes in their time, left divided nations or disputed legacies. Yet the nation and the reputation that Ataturk built have endured. Though it is 60 years since his death, Turks continue to look on him with gratitude for assuring independence, preventing partition and avoiding Turkey's domination by the victorious powers after the first world war.
