Introduction
Stroke is the third leading cause of death in the United States; approximately one-third of the nearly 500,000 Americans who suffer a stroke each year die. Stroke survivors, now numbering more than 3 million, frequently require intensive rehabilitation or long-term care due to multiple disabilities. More than $20 billion is the estimated economic impact of the health care expenses and lost productivity of stroke victims. Clearly, effective interventions for the treatment of acute stroke are urgently needed to lower the death rate and reduce the morbidity of stroke survivors.
