The tradition of autobiographical fiction has had a long history in the world of Japanese letters, and has occupied a place of special significance and influence in the development of modern Japanese literature. While a relatively large number of works of shishosetsu ("I-novels") are available in translation, less well represented are those works that resist or parody the form and challenge its apparent dominance in the realm of belles lettres.
