Article: Akzo Nobel to Raise Dutch Chlorine Capacity.

AKZO NOBEL IS PLANNING to increase its chlorine capacity at Rotterdam-Botlek by 20 percent, or 60,000 tons, taking it to 350,000 tons per year, even though it has excess capacity at its other two chlorine plants in the Netherlands.

The expansion, which will be combined with a 70,000-ton expansion of caustic soda capacity at Rotterdam, taking the site to 400,000 tons per year, is in response to higher chlorine demand from Shell, which manufactures epichlorohydrin at a neighboring site.

Akzo Nobel will invest Fl 50 million ($25 million) to increase its membrane electrolysis capacity, as well as for improvements that will yield a 7 percent energy savings ...
