Medical Mutual of Ohio is laying the groundwork to grow its business in two areas - Medicaid and Medicare - that so far have proved highly challenging for insurers.
The Cleveland-based health plan is negotiating to sell its existing Medicaid HMO enrollment in exchange for an interest in a larger Medicaid venture. It also has received federal approval to operate a Medicare HMO in three Northeast Ohio counties and part of a fourth.
Medical Mutual is banking on its large enrollment and sophisticated computer capabilities to allow it to operate on a profitable basis health insurance programs for the poor, whose care is reimbursed by Medicaid, and for the elderly, ...
