MONTEREY, Calif. _ John Steinbeck described Monterey's Cannery Row this way:
``Cannery Row is the gathered and scattered, tin and iron and rust and splintered wood, chipped pavement and weedy lots and junk heaps, sardine canneries of corrugated iron, honky tonks, restaurants and whore houses, and little crowded groceries, and laboratories and flophouses.''
What would he say now of the world-class Monterey Bay Aquarium, the wine-tasting rooms, T-shirt emporiums, upscale hotels and the ice-cream parlor? Or what of the manicured flower garden surrounding his statue right there on Cannery ...
