With the European Central Bank up and running, observers have turned their attention to the new organisation's transparency and policies
As the dust settled after the arguments over the appointment of the head of the European Central Bank (ECB), the new institution formally came into existence on 1 June. The first president, Wim Duisenberg, now has the job of pushing ahead with the final preparations for euroland, with economic and monetary union coming into effect at the beginning of next year with 11 member countries.
