Warren Beatty must have had a good time making Bulworth (20th Century Fox), and his new political satire makes a lot of that fun infectious. Directing, writing the screenplay (with Jeremey Pikser) and playing the California senator who is having a nervous breakdown during the last weeks of a primary campaign for reelection, Beatty is to be applauded for using his star capital to denounce the hypocrisy and racism of current "smart" politics.
You'd have a nervous breakdown, too, if you had to say "We stand at the doorstep of a new millennium" at every campaign stop. Beatty is excellent in conveying the self-disgust of Bulworth, a leftover from the liberal hopes ...
