Windows 7, Microsoft 's latest version of its operating system, was due to go on sale as The Economist went to press. It replaces the much reviled Windows Vista, which was released in early 2007.
Apple 's quarterly profits increased by 47% to $1.7 billion year on year, well above expectations. Several other technology giants also reported good results. Google 's profits were up by 27% year on year, at $1.6 billion. IBM 's also rose, by 14% to $3.2 billion. And Yahoo! reported net income of $186m for the quarter--up by 242% year on year--although revenue fell by 12%, to $1.6 billion.
