In 1994, after the centre left won the general election in Italy, Gianfranco Fini, at that time leader of the National Alliance but still secretary of the neo-fascist MSI (Movimento Sociale Italiano), stated in an interview that Mussolini remained the major Italian statesman of the century. Reactions to Fini's statement were overwhelming.
