CVC Capital Partners' agreement to buy Anheuser-Busch InBev's Central European beer brands for $2.2 billion represented more than just a strategic move to pare the seller's beverage portfolio.
The deal, announced last Thursday by the Luxembourg buyout house, marked the latest private-equity gamble on the beer industry in 2009, as well as another divestiture sale by AB InBev to a financial buyer.
In February, New York's KPS Capital Partners acquired Labatt USA and Genesee Beer maker High Falls Brewing Co. in separate deals.
