J. D. Salinger's former lover, Joyce Maynard, raises high the roof on his notoriously private life
You can sneer all you want at Joyce Maynard's journalism, chortle at her Web site and gag over her novels, but you've got to hand it to the girl: when J. D. Salinger served raw, frozen peas for breakfast, she did not flee screaming. No, she stayed. And ate. And remembered. Now she's about to publish the whole story of their long-rumored relationship in "At Home in the World," due from Picador USA in October. Judging from the excerpt appearing in the new Vanity Fair, the food pretty much set the tone for the love affair.
