As support for universal rotavirus vaccination grows, so does the competition.
The imminent approval of Wyeth-Ayerst Laboratories' rotavirus vaccine (dubbed RotaShield in the U.S. and Rotamune abroad) promises the firm a generous return on its investment.
But challengers wait in the wings. Merck has a rotavirus vaccine in preclinical studies, and SmithKline Beecham is already planning Phase II studies for its candidate. Other potential challengers - and Wyeth itself - are working on improved vaccines using strategies such as human and animal live-virus strains, virus-like particles, inactivated strains, DNA vaccines, and microencapsulated rotavirus antigens.
