Aug. 19--The guns of August are firing in the public-relations battle involving Union Pacific Railroad.
Fresh off one exchange of rhetorical salvos, Union Pacific and its critics are dueling across Texas this week, this time over the status of the carrier's recovery and its $5.4 billion merger with Southern Pacific Railroad.
Union Pacific draws a protective circle around its prized franchise in Houston, where it controls an estimated 85 percent of the rail market. Its detractors seek federal help in carving out concessions at Union Pacific's expense.
