The Health Insurance Portability and Accountability Act of 1996 ensures that developments in EDI and electronic commerce in health care will be more predictable. Now that the law has defined the standards, the challenge for providers and payers lies in successful implementation. Automation of all transactions mandated by the act is inevitable, but the timing of implementation may vary from region to region. Regionally based provider-payer forums can accelerate EDI implementation by initiating communication among providers, payers, and vendors and providing an impetus for standardization. Financial managers should consider how to participate in local EDI initiatives.
