As a growing number of pollutants make more freshwater fish than ever unfit to eat, catch-and-release may soon be the practice of choice for all anglers in America.
State advisories recommending limits on eating walleye, muskie, northern pike and other fish rose more than 70 percent between 1993 and 1996, reports the Natural Resources Defense Council. In 1996, 47 states listed 2194 advisories, with consumption limits ranging from once a week to not at all. Eleven states, mostly eastern, had advisories for all rivers and streams, lakes or all three, while 100 percent of the Great Lakes and connecting waters were also under advisory.
