o Arpida A/S, of Reinach, Switzerland, withdrew its marketing application for Mersarex (iclaprim) in the European Union, citing a review by the Committee for Medicinal Products for Human Use, which stated that the data provided did not allow the committee to conclude on a positive risk-benefit balance for the antibiotic drug in complicated skin and soft-tissue infections. The FDA's advisory committee previously voted against recommending iclaprim's approval in the U.S. Arpida, which laid off most of its work force earlier this year, recently agreed to merge with Basel, Switzerland-based Evolva SA.
