IN BOTH THE PEOPLE'S REPUBLIC of China and the United States of America, citizens need nursing care. People in both countries have the same needs for preventive and restorative care, and they are afflicted with the same illnesses as noted in Table 1, which lists the leading causes of death in both countries. The top three are very similar, with heart disease being highest in the United States and cancer in China. In terms of average life expectancy at birth, in the United States, it is 75 years for males and 80 years for females, and in China, it is 71 years for males and 74 years for females (World Health Organization [WHO], 2007).
