The End of the Beginning
Talk about deadly meetings: How about a funeral at work? That is what was starting in the Plant 4 conference room, as a key turning point began in the story of self-direction at Bandag, Inc., a manufacturer of equipment for the commercial tire retreading industry.
Employees whispered and craned their necks to figure out what was going on. Each one had a 3"-by-5" index card, held in a hand or stuffed into a pocket, on which they had written something that they hoped would never return to the plant.
