GlaxoSmithKline Plc (London, UK) won FDA approval for a cervical cancer vaccine to compete with Merck & Co. 's Gardasil. The agency cleared the shot, Cervarix, for young women ages 10 to 25, Glaxo said. Cervarix and Gardasil target strains of human papillomavirus, or HPV, a common sexually transmitted virus that can cause serious infections. Concerns that Cervarix may cause miscarriages contributed to a delay in Glaxo's drug application in 2007, helping give Merck a three-year head start on the U.S. market.
