Location: The Middle East is a region, not a continent. It includes parts of Africa, Asia, and Europe. Many countries in the region share cultural and political traits. Islam is the major religion, except in Israel (Judaism, 76.4 percent) and Cyprus (Christianity, 78 percent).
Physical features: Much of the Middle East is desert, but Mediterranean coastal areas receive rain during the winter and have hot, dry summers. Several countries are major oil producers.
