Chile's undersecretary of the sea, a branch of the ministry of defense, has rejected a maritime permit request for GDF Suez's planned Barrancones coal-fired plant, Chilean newspaper El Mercurio reported.

Set for the La Higuera municipality of Chile's region IV, the 566MW complex is expected to cost US$1.1bn.

The EIS, which was submitted in November 2007, is still under review.

Plans for the thermo plant included the construction of a port to receive coal and diesel imports, BNamericas previously reported.
