THERE are few things in life more humiliating than being fired from a quiz team. It's potentially even more embarrassing if it happens by stealth, when nobody actually points out your woeful lack of general knowledge but you simply aren't invited back.

Three months later, you comment to a group of friends in the pub that it's a shame you all let the team dissolve and they start looking down at their feet.

One of them makes an excuse to go to the loo and you spy them standing in front of the leader board next to the bar, concealing the name of the team in first place.

I have never been officially sacked from a pub ...
