WHEN I THINK about freedom it is always from the point of view of the true distinction between freedom and liberty. As I interpret the American story, liberty has to do primarily with elements of the social contract. It can be given, it can be taken away. It can be wiped out. It is related to external but very important agreements within the structure of the society itself. Therefore, it can be altered by law, improved, destroyed, prostituted or glorified.
