House panel approves insurer antirust change
The House Judiciary Committee has approved legislation that would strip health insurers and medical malpractice insurers of the limited immunity from antitrust law that they enjoy under the McCarran-Ferguson Act of 1945. The Health Insurance Industry Antitrust Enforcement Act preserves state regulation of insurers on such matters as rate-setting and information. Senate Democratic leaders have said they will offer their version of the antitrust bill as an amendment to health care reform legislation when it reaches the Senate floor.
